Finding Peace in the Crowded of Malioboro

Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It consists of over 17,000 islands, including Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java, and parts of Borneo and New Guinea. Indonesia is the world's largest island country and the 14th-largest country by area, at 1,904,569 square kilometres (735,358 square miles). With about 270 million people, Indonesia is the world's fourth-most populous country and the most populous Muslim-majority country. Java, the world's most populous island, is home to more than half of the country's population

Malioboro is the name of a street in the city of Jogja, Indonesia which is the center of the area that sells various souvenirs typical of the city of Jogja. Along Malioboro Street, you are used to the crowds of vehicles and people. Malioboro area usually busy that doesn't mean there isn't a suitable area for you loyal Asian Destination readers who may have an introverted personality and don't like crowds.

Here are some recommendations for places around Malioboro that are suitable for seeking tranquility in the midst of the crowds of Malioboro

1.      Jogja Library Center (JLC)

2.      Vredeburg Fort Museum

3.      Yogyakarta Presidential Palace Museum (Yogyakarta Grand Building)

4.      Shopping Center Bookstore Area

Actually, there is still the Yogyakarta Sultanate Palace and the Sonobudoyo Museum, but it feels like both places are already famous, so Asian Destination this time will review these 4 places.

First, the Jogja Library Center even though its name is a library, but this library is intended for those of you who are looking for a collection of old newspapers and magazines physically or digitally , JLC has various collections of print media from the 1945s, besides that at the Jogja Library Center there is a collection of books that are the result of collaboration with Japan which named Kyoto Book Corner. This place has two floors where the 2nd floor is more intended for discussion. In the midst of the denseness of Malioboro, the Jogja Library Center is very quiet, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Another interesting thing is the cultural heritage building which was once the building of the former bookstore and publisher "Kolf Bunning", no wonder the nuances of classical architecture are very thick.

Second, the Vredeburg Fort Museum was first built in 1760 on orders from Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I and at the request of the Dutch government. The initial pretext for the purpose of building this fort was to maintain the security of the palace. However, the real purpose of the existence of this fort was to facilitate Dutch supervision of the Yogyakarta Palace. Currently, Fort Vredeburg is used as a museum which contains dioramas of historical events that occurred in Yogyakarta. The interesting thing at the Vredeburg Fort Museum is the many Personal Computers (PCs) that present various kinds of questions in the form of games related to the existing dioramas.

Third, the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace Museum became very important and very meaningful when the government of the Republic of Indonesia moved from Jakarta to Yogyakarta on January 6, 1946. The palace was turned into the Presidential Palace, the residence of President Soekarno and his family. Vice President Mohammad Hatta and his family at that time lived in the building now occupied by Korem 072/Pamungkas, which is not far from the Palace complex. At this palace, General Sudirman was appointed as Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces (3 June 1947), followed by the inauguration as the Chief Executive of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia (3 July 1947), as well as five Cabinets of the Republic of Indonesia. Since December 28, 1949, with the transfer of the President to Jakarta, this palace is no longer the residence of the President.

Fourth, Shopping Center is a collection of bookstores in one place. These bookstores often offer lower prices and quality from new books to used books. The interesting thing if you have never been to a bookstore like this Shopping Center, if the seller offers a certain price, you can do the bargaining process as well as the merchants in the Malioboro Street area. This place is highly recommended for bookworms who want to find a collection of books.

To get to the four tourist destinations actually very easy, first you have to go to Malioboro Street which can be accessed on foot from Tugu Yogyakarta Station because it is very close to the Jogja City Station. Well, the Jogja Library Center is in front of the Grand Inna Malioboro Hotel, to reach the Vredeburg Fort Museum which is opposite the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace, you can walk again or take Trans Jogja or if you are curious you can take a Delman (traditional means of transportation by horse). While the Shopping Center is next to the Taman Pintar (Smart Park).

The cost needed to go there is quite affordable for foreign tourists, only paying IDR 10,000 to enter the Fort Vredeburg Museum and the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace Museum, while the Jogja Library Center and Shopping Center are free to enter. Don't forget to install the pedulilindugi app to prevent crowds. Even though Malioboro is a tourist area, you can find lodging from cheap to expensive classes

After being reviewed above, you must be curious, why does it have to be a historical place again and again. Asian Destination readers must remember that the city of Jogja is not far from historical tourism and Malioboro is one of them. But don't worry, you can also just rest while looking for calm in the crowd of Malioboro in the places that have been recommended earlier, because the main purpose of this post is for readers to find a quiet place in the middle of the crowds of Malioboro.

The ideal visiting time is actually from Monday-Friday at 08.30-15.00 because these places are likely to be closed outside these hours. But don't worry if you go to the Shopping Center it's open every day from 08.00-21.00. Other than that you must get a permit before visiting the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace

In addition to the four destinations, you can visit the Sonobudoyo Museum, Yogyakarta Sultanate Palace, Pakualaman Temple, UGM Biology Museum, Point 0 KM Yogyakarta, Taman Pintar and Taman Sari. All of these places are easy to reach from Malioboro.
