Mount Kailash is considered
a sacred mountain for billions of people who follow Hinduism, Buddhism,
Jainism, Bon and indigenous Tibetan religions. One story says that there
is a sacred peak called Meru and is the center of the universe as well as a
ladder to heaven. Over time, Meru was associated with the peak of Mount Kailash
in Tibet. Then, there is also a Hindu religious belief that says Mount Kailash
can erase sins for life life and provide protection from evil spirits.
Hindus also believe that the peak of Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva. Although not climbable, Buddhists will usually travel around Mount Kailash. Similar to Hinduism, Buddhism believes that walking around Kailash will wash away sins.
