Sarez Lake is a lake in Tajikistan's
Gorno-Badakhshan province's Rushon District. The length is around 75.8
kilometers (47.1 miles), the depth is a few hundred meters, the water surface
elevation is approximately 3,263 meters (10,705 feet) above sea level, and the
water volume is more than 16 cubic kilometers (3.8 cu mi). The surrounding
mountains rise to a height of over 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) above the lake
level.
After a large earthquake in 1911, the
Murghab River was blocked by a large landslide, forming the lake. Scientists
believe that the Usoi Dam, a landslide dam built by the earthquake, is unstable
due to local seismicity, and that the topography beneath the lake is at risk of
catastrophic flooding if the dam fails during a future earthquake. Shadau Lake
is a tiny body of water west of Sarez Lake and southwest of the Usoi Dam.
